Fisheries and Aquaculture of Pakistan
Fisheries and aquaculture are essential to Pakistan's economy and food security. The country has a coastline of around 1,050 km along the Arabian Sea. It has an extensive network of rivers, canals, lakes, and ponds, providing suitable environments for fish farming.
The government of Pakistan has taken several steps to promote the development of the fisheries and aquaculture sector. These include the establishment of hatcheries for fish seed production, providing credit facilities to fish farmers, developing fish processing and marketing infrastructure, and implementing regulations to control overfishing and maintain sustainable fisheries.
According to the Pakistan Fisheries Statistics, the total
fish production in the country was estimated to be around 4,327,951 metric tons
in 2019-2020, out of which about 67% was from marine sources and the remaining
33% from inland sources. The contribution of the fisheries and aquaculture
sector to the national GDP was about 1.3%.
Despite the government's efforts, Pakistan's fisheries and aquaculture sector
faces several challenges, including a lack of infrastructure, poor quality
seed, outdated fishing practices, and low awareness among farmers regarding
modern aquaculture techniques. However, with continued support and investment,
the sector has the potential to contribute significantly to the country's
economy and food security.
